Consciously avoid single-use plastics and you’ll realise how pervasive they are. Coffee cups, straws, grocery bags, fruit and food packaging, amazon delivery items mummified in paper and plastic, water/milk/juice/yoghurt bottles…the list is endless. Sustainability starts at home with conscious buying decisions.
The #zerowaste community is a very small one that requires radical lifestyle changes. Trying to go #zerowaste to begin with will be a bad idea, very likely to fail. Start by reducing waste. What the world needs is not a small community that produces no waste but a sizable population that is more mindful about the waste they produce.
We’re responsible for the planet we leave behind for our children. By making sustainable living a core value of your family, you will help influence people and businesses around you to review their relationship with waste.
Here are a few tips to get started:
- Carry reusable bags for your grocery shopping
- Carry reusable cups & stainless steel straws with you (There’s always room for it in your partner’s handbag)
- Refuse to buy food wrapped in plastic: fruits, veggies, meat, milk etc. You’ll always find other options without plastic containers or packaging.
- Don’t accept take-away orders in plastic bags
- Use re-fillable bottles of soap, shampoo and toiletries at home
- Use eco-friendly alternatives to everyday plastics like floss and earbuds
